Ever since US Med-Equip was formed, our company has helped fund for causes and events we care about, including Shriner’s Hospital for Children, The Periwinkle Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Texas Children’s Hospital Fun Run, the Houston Food Bank and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. We also helped send donations to Florida as part of Hurricane Michael disaster relief.
As we reflect on 2018, we remember times where we rallied together as a team to meet our fundraising goals and give back to the communities we live in. Throughout the year, we raised $5,191 by offering employees “$3 Jean Fridays,” surpassing our goal. Those funds were then matched by our officers, bringing the grand total to $10,382! This amount was donated to The Periwinkle Foundation – an organization that provides camps and programs for Texas Children’s Hospital patients and their families who are impacted by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Our donation covered three children’s camp expenses at 100 percent! We are proud to have surpassed our goals and look forward to continuing our “$3 Jean Fridays” to raise even more money. During the holidays, we were honored to partake in The Periwinkle Foundation’s annual Christmas celebration. Our volunteer committee dressed up as elves and made the children smile, while helping with presents and taking Santa pictures.
On October 27th, we attended The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society “Light the Night” Walk – an event that brings people together to walk with red lanterns held high to show care and compassion to those affected by leukemia & lymphoma. We managed to raise a grand total of $3,335 in the name of Melodie Wesson – a fellow US Med-Equipian who was diagnosed with follicular non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in July 2018. We showed our fierce support for her – naming the fundraiser “Miracles for Melodie.” We learned in December that her cancer was in remission; a true Christmas miracle for all of us!
On April 7th, we took part in the Texas Children’s Fun Run to help fundraise for the Texas Children’s Hospital Foundation. The USME volunteer committee participated in the run. It goes without saying that all who partook had a blast!
As part of the Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy Program, we helped at the Star Wars-themed event “May the 4th be With You,” which gave underprivileged children a backpack of food and snacks to take home so they had something to eat after school. Our wonderful volunteer committee helped package hundreds of backpacks with nutritious food for the Texas children.
As part of our green initiative with the Arbor Day Foundation, we continue to donate surplus units from our inventory to Medical Bridges – a nonprofit that works with under-served communities around the world. We are also now enrolled in recycling programs and have a paperless workflow management system, which helps us stay environmentally accountable.
Not only did we help save our planet, we helped save others with our US Med-Equip sponsored blood drive. Did you know, every time someone donates blood, 3 lives are saved? Well, on July 11, 2018, we saved 60 lives by donating blood and platelets to local medical centers and hospitals.
This year we witnessed Hurricane Michael sweep through the Florida Peninsula, leaving a disarray of displaced Floridians and damaged structures. As suspected, Florida’s medical centers and hospitals began to fill up quickly, offering care to those injured during the storm or in its aftermath. US Med-Equip jumped into action, sending truckloads of life-supporting medical equipment to help meet demands and ensure each hospital was provided the equipment they would need. In the recovery process, we also rallied together to host a toy drive, collecting boxes and boxes of toys, clothing and shoes to later donate to Bay District Schools to provide relief during the holidays to those affected by the storm. Through our efforts, we continue to reflect on the good we were able to accomplish as a team and carry that same momentum into 2019. We are looking forward to an even better year, with more donations and fundraisers than ever before.
